Anti-Slavery Week: The Importance of Responsible Recruitment in Hospitality

Modern slavery can often be hidden in plain sight.

As recruiters, we work closely with candidates, workers and employers; this makes awareness particularly important.

Why does this matter in hospitality?

Hospitality is specifically identified as a sector at risk of labour exploitation within modern slavery.

Hospitality is built around people, but the nature of the industry can also create opportunities for vulnerable workers to be exploited.

Modern slavery isn’t always obvious. Warning signs can include someone not having access to their own passport or ID, wages being withheld, working excessive hours, unusual travel arrangements or another person controlling their movements or finances

This makes recruiters an important point of contact.

Responsible recruitment starts with appropriate checks

Recruitment checks aren’t simply an administrative exercise. Confirming that an individual has the appropriate Right to Work and documentation forms part of a wider approach to responsible recruitment.

Recruiters can also be well placed to notice when something isn’t quite right. Our existing awareness guidance, for example, asks recruiters to consider whether an individual possesses their own legal documents, has their own bank account and is legally able to work in the UK.

Being alert to these details can help identify circumstances where further attention may be needed.

Our commitment to preventing modern slavery

Our Modern Slavery Policy sets out our commitment to driving out and preventing modern slavery and human trafficking from our business.
