Stress Awareness Day: Looking After Yourself in Hospitality

Hospitality can be an exciting and rewarding industry, but it can also be demanding. Busy services, long shifts, changing rotas and the pressure to deliver a great customer experience can sometimes make us feel stressed.

Today is Stress Awareness Day, and we want to remind hospitality workers that looking after your mental wellbeing is just as important as looking after the guests and customers you serve.

Recognising when stress is building

Stress can affect everyone differently. You might feel overwhelmed, find it difficult to switch off after a shift, struggle to concentrate or simply feel more tired and irritable than usual.

Recognising these signs early can help you take a step back and understand what you need.

A few small changes can make a difference:

  • Take your breaks where possible and give yourself time to reset.
  • Stay hydrated and eat properly during longer shifts.
  • Speak to someone if your workload is becoming difficult to manage.
  • Give yourself time to properly switch off outside work.
  • Remember that asking for support is a strength, not a weakness.

Creating a healthier hospitality industry

Employers and managers also have an important role to play. Clear communication, fair rotas, appropriate breaks and a supportive working environment can all help reduce unnecessary pressure on teams.

Whether you’re working front of house, in the kitchen, behind the bar or managing a team, nobody should feel they have to struggle silently.

This Stress Awareness Day, take a moment to check in with yourself and the people around you. A simple conversation could make more of a difference than you realise.
